Dilys Williams – In Memory

Dilys was a dedicated Trustee with Perthyn for over 8 years. Sadly, on 5th December 2018 she passed away following a difficult battle with cancer.

Dilys was a caring, friendly, approachable person with a lively sense of humour and had the ability to remain calm whatever was going on around her. In carrying out her Trustee duties she did so with high levels of commitment and energy.

She was Deputy Chair and chaired the Service Delivery Scrutiny Committee. Here she showed her compassion and interest in the people we support and she loved hearing about the progress people made and the things they got up to in their lives.

Whenever she visited people supported by Perthyn, she would be straight in there; getting alongside people, talking to them and was always interested in their stories.

Dilys was an open and sincere person who contributed hugely to what Perthyn does and it leaves a huge gap on our Board.
She will be missed by so many and for so many reasons, but we are thankful for her time with us and all that she did to help and support Perthyn and what we do.

W Stands for Winners! The Wave Workplace Challenge – Winners!

Not only do Perthyn employees excel at their day jobs, they are in fact radio quiz champions too!

During the week of 10th to 15th September 2018, a group of very enthusiastic and outrageously talented Perthyn team members in Swansea went head to head against ‘Mad Science’ in The Wave’s Workplace Challenge, live on radio each afternoon at 2.30pm. Both teams were competing for the ultimate prize – a DAB radio and the prestigious title of The Wave’s Workplace Challenge WINNERS!’

Our quiz team consisted of the following members; Team Captain Melanie Lush – (HR), Lyndsey Thomas (Finance), Andrew Thomas (Finance), Charlotte Phipps (Finance), Hollie Delve (Finance), Gareth Morgan (HR), David Rees (HR), Keli Walters (Office Manager), Josie Parker (Training).

The first day of quizzing on Monday 10th September started off with a bang, with Team Perthyn smashed it with a winning score of 5 out of 5 points within the 30 allocated seconds. We then proceeded to win each day after that. The Mad Science stood a chance against the quick brains of our formidable team.

On Friday 15th September we began the last day of the challenge on 17 points, whilst our competitors only had 14 points, so we had pretty much won then already! After a week’s total of 25 questions, we were announced as the overall winners of the Workplace Challenge with a total of 19 points.

Sian Martin, the presenter of the radio show, said she’d really enjoyed the excellent banter she had with our team, taking delight in mocking Gareth Morgan with his delightfully funny ‘Hellooooo’ greeting, which she likened to the voice of British aristocracy from the 1920s!  Sian also made a mistake on one of the questions when she erroneously asked us what type of fruit a Pomegranate is, instead of ‘food’, which of course erupted into shrieks of laughter. The ‘Hellooooo’ greeting became our repartee for the entire week, and we believe many listeners will now want this audio clip as their ringtone! Anyone who would like to hear this sound clip can contact me and I’ll be happy to share it although royalties will have to be paid to Gareth Morgan!

We also heavily promoted Perthyn live on air, informing thousands of listeners that we’re recruiting for Support Staff across England and Wales. Great fun was had by all and we encourage others to participate next time, as it’s a great team morale booster.

To listen to our team’s fantastic success, please visit our intranet news page.

New Trustees Wanted

Perthyn is a well-established charity that provides care and support to over 200 adults with learning difficulties across Wales and England. Working with nine different Local Authorities, Perthyn (a Welsh word for Belonging) is a large not-for-profit social care provider with nearly 800 employees and an annual turnover in excess of £17million.

Perthyn is a dynamic charity constantly striving to improve the lives of those we support, to enable them live with dignity and to be active and valued citizens within their own communities.

As Perthyn continues to expand, we are looking for three new Trustees to complement and strengthen our existing Board.

The role of a Trustee is a rewarding one. Meeting 6 times per year, plus attendance at perhaps 1 or 2 sub committees, usually in Cardiff or Swansea (but with Video Conferencing facilities available from our other offices in Nottingham, Northampton, Shrewsbury and Newtown), our Trustees ensure that Perthyn delivers on its ambitious vision and charitable objectives.

Applications are particularly welcome from candidates who can bring diversity to the Board and who have an understanding of the challenges faced by social care providers; but the main requirement is to have the empathy and passion to support us as we make a real difference to people’s lives.

If you’re interested in joining our passionate, forward-thinking Board of Trustees, please contact Steve Cox, Acting CEO, either by calling our head office in Swansea on 01792 311980 or by emailing TrusteeVacancy@perthyn.org.uk

Perthyn’s Community Connections Service Officially Launches

CC Launch 2016

L – R Councillor Winston Lemon, Rhian Bolgiani (Regional Manager Perthyn) Mayor Bill Thomas, Councillor Jeff Owen

On 27th September, Perthyn celebrated the official opening of its Community Connections Service at Y Pwynt in Llanelli.

Perthyn believes everybody can and should have the right to meaningful activity within the community. Community Connections helps people to learn and develop skills to become more independent. By helping people access opportunities in their local communities they can develop friendships and gain respect from others. This in turn can increase confidence and people end the day satisfied having achieved something.

Y Pwynt is an ideal base for the co-ordination of Community Connections. It has office space to accommodate a team of managers as well as training and meeting facilities. To aid the skill development opportunities for the people we support, we have an accessible kitchen with high & low level surfaces, as well as IT resources and Inclusive Communication equipment. It is also a resource that local clubs, associations and businesses within the community can use.

Staff Get On Their Bikes for Charity

Support staff from Pen-y-Coed, St Clears, joined together for a charity bike ride and  raised  more than £800  to help make improvements to the grounds and woodlands at the residential home.

The sponsored cycle ride was just one of the activities that the support staff in the Carmarthen-based service have undertaken to raise funds for Perthyn and other charities.

Everyone managed to complete the  40 mile course from Cross Hands to Tenby – although it was the furthest many had ever ridden!

Staff completing the cycle challenge raised £827.25 towards an environmental project where they hope to improve the surrounding woodland with the view to making it more accessible to the individuals they support and establishing it as environmentally sustainable. Access to outdoor woodland space is known to have positive therapeutic value in reducing stress and anxiety.

Johnathan Morgan from Penycoed said: “  All of the eight cyclists who took part in the bike ride are always looking for ways that we can improve the opportunities and quality of life for the individuals at Pen- y- Coed.  We decided to raise money towards purchasing something for the environment at Penycoed by challenging ourselves to a 40 mile bike ride from Crosshands to Tenby”.
